At the beginning of her career, Nina Simone sang the love songs of her time, the standards, in a straight ahead style. As her career grew, she spread her wings. The blues, original songs, pop songs, and of course, protest songs entered her repertoire. Theis show takes us through Nina's musical journey from being prim and proper to becoming a firecracker.

Back by popular demand, Claude Hall returns with Nina Simone: A Jazz Tribute, Volume 2. This second installment dives deeper into Simone’s rich catalog, celebrating the power, passion, and profound artistry that defined her legacy.

Honoring the journey of a legend... Before joining the civil rights protest movement and shining more light on the African American experience in the United States, Nina Simone sang the popular love songs of her time. In fact, it was I Loves You Porgy, sung in a Atlantic City piano bar (her first gig), which got her noticed by the industry. Impassioned Spirit explores the landscape of her life through these two repertoires which seem to exist at polar opposites of each other. Yet, they have something in common... Nina poured her whole heart into every song she sang.

Nina Simone, The Other Woman. Through the songs which accompanied her journey, as well as lesser-known anecdotes of her life story, I explore the feminine facet of the icon, Nina Simone. She faced Fear when singing of the uncomfortable truths she witnessed in this country. She struggled with Fear when it came to her personal life. While, in the end, she came out on top, the battle created a tumultuous journey.

In Part 2 of this series in tribute to Nina Simone, we explore the relationships which accompanied her on her journey... from being her father's favorite to no longer speaking to him and missing his funeral, her first love which was never to be consecrated, and the prostitute who befriended her when she was alone in the big city.
